Ear pain during flights
Many people experience ear pain during flights, especially during landings. The pain usually passes as soon as you land. We offer some tips that can help stop or at least mitigate the discomfort while you are flying.
What happens in the ear during the flight?
Ear pain occurs when the air pressure inside your ear differs from the pressure in the surrounding space. Normally, a tiny ear trumpet valve maintains the balance of the pressure by opening and closing when you swallow or yawn. On the plane the air pressure can change very quickly, particularly during take-off and landing. At this point, it has an impact on the eardrum which also causes pain.
What are the symptoms?
The most common symptom is quite a strong pain in the ears, especially during take-off and landing. But these feelings usually go away soon after landing. In rare cases, the pain can continue, you can feel the stuffiness in the ears.
Some people feel dizzy, especially when rising sharply there may be insubstantial hearing impairment . Also quite rarely people hear ringing in your ears or squeak.
What are the precautions?
If your ears are laid especially as a result of cold or infection, you may temporarily better not to fly. If you cannot postpone the trip due to bad health , there are treatments that you can consult your doctor for advice on how to reduce the risk of ill effects during the flight.
Ways to fight the pain and its prevention
Taking tablets or syrup before the flight, an adult can avoid the pain in the ears. Unfortunately it will not help children. Widely used on the basis of decongestants medicine, which can be found at any drugstore. The tablets or syrup must be taken half an hour before take-off. After taking the drug you can be sleepy.
Some people use a nasal spray, which typically contain ephedrine, oxymetazoline, xylometazoline as the active ingredient. But there is no any reliable extensive research confirming the effectiveness of these funds in order to prevent ear pain.
There are also some “popular” ways of dealing with ear pain and with a feeling of stuffiness:
- To reduce the pressure, one can make swallowing movements, as well as to issue strong exhale while pinching your nose.
- Absorption of candy or cough drops, make you more likely to swallow, which again leads to the equalization of pressure inside the ear.
- To fight nasal one can use special balls with small tube. The ball must be inflated with air using alternate each nostril, closing the other nostril with your finger.
